IBM To Release A New Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

IBM To Release A New Virtual Desktop InfrastructureIBM is working in conjunction with over 100 partner resellers worldwide to bring ITs new VDI system to small and medium businesses. Basically, what a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) does is provide a regular end user, the person who ultimately uses the desktop, to complete business functions with a virtual PC that behaves like their current PC does while working in the office, while at home or while travelling.

VDIs are centrally located systems where a user’s files and profile are stored centrally so that they don’t have to carry around files. According to the GM of IBM’s Smart Business Solutions unit, Dan Cerutti, this new VDI is intended to lower the high administrative overhead when instituting a VDI deployment. He says that in many instances, smaller organizations don’t have the IT knowledge to keep up with the labyrinthine complications associated with VDI.

Cerutti further indicated that they have drastically simplified how VDIs are done. This package will enable users to access both Linux-based and Microsoft Windows operating system desktops. Users will also be able to run their desktops without server connection by using a USB drive.

The desktops will be centrally managed on the IBM System X servers that run Suse Linux. This type of virtualization, offered by Virtual Bridges, is driven by the Verde Software. The package will also offer a group of management tools which eases maintenance and configuration, called IBM’s Smart Business Foundation.

This new VDI is the first of a new line of pre-built IBM systems with the primary function of easing deployments for both small and medium-sized businesses.
